NSPCC Safeguarding and Protecting Children in Sport

In November 2004 South Yorkshire Sport achieved the Preliminary Standard of the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children’s (NSPCC) Safeguarding and Protecting Children in Sport.

As part of our commitment to child and young people in sport and physical activity and achieving the standard we developed the South Yorkshire Sport Child Protection Policy. The aim of the document is to ensure that anyone employed or deployed by South Yorkshire Sport:

  • Understands their personal responsibility for protecting the children with whom they work.
  • Is able to take appropriate action if there are suggestions that a child is being abused.
  • Takes steps to minimise opportunities for misunderstandings.

Safeguarding and ProtectingThe document is appropriate only to coaches, officials, volunteers and staff employed or deployed by South Yorkshire Sport.

Copies of the policy and are available from the partnership office. To request a copy please contact 0114 223 5674 or email

Nationally, the Standard has been developed in order to help safeguard and protect children and young people in sport. They provide a national benchmark of good practice to work towards. They raise awareness and help organisations know what they need to do to protect children involved in sport and minimise avoidable risks. When implemented fully they should provide parents with increased confidence and peace of min. Most important of all, they should help create safer environments for children, where they can enjoy and get the very best from their involvement in sport. Currently, Governing Bodies of Sport and County Sports Partnerships are working towards the standards and safeguarding children and young people in sport and physical activity.
